General purpose submersible sump pumps work submerged underwater in a pit or basin to drain excess liquid and prevent flooding in basements and crawl spaces. They have a pump body and motor combined into one unit, and the water surrounding the pump cools the motor so they can run longer without overheating, compared to pedestal pumps, which have motors above the sump pit.
